Foul Shot

These are some of our poems inspired by Edwin Hoey.  They are moment in time poems about a person and a thing they are using, and depict tension...aren't they awesome.

Scariest thing of my life

With 1 second left on my crying limit
And 60 seconds until she goes down,
The frightened girl in the centre of pupils,
Shot by a formula of tears,
Steps down sideways with her feet
Squeezes her hand on the rope,
Step by step goes down the cliff
Then measures how much further she has to go,
One hand lets go of the rope,
Tightens the rope,
Wobbles,
Wavers,
Falls,
And then pulls her hand up and … misses the rope

The rope
slid up and away,
Slide,
Moved
and stopped
Screeching sound came from the gear
And then,
               And then,
                               And then,
Right before the fall ended
she caught on to the rope.

SWIMMING

Starting to get ready
Big deep breaths
Moving up to the platform
Waiting for the whistle
Two blocks click together
...off I go!

Fingertips squeeze into the water
The water slithers up my arm
Water trickles through my hair
Arms move
Stretch
Slither
Slip
Legs kick
Soothe
Splash…
And then
       And then
              And then
Right before the finish line
The crowd starts to roar!!!

The Victory

With 10 people standing on the start board
And green, yellow, red colours shine on the board
A girl, waited for the green to glow
The eyes drew down before she submerged
Turned her head, swimmers be still and ready
But it’s only her that
Shivers
Trembles
Shakes
Exhales

The board
turn green,
then submerge
Dashing fast
the lanes and the walk ways are soaking
                         And then
                                       And then
                                                     And then
Right before the finish horn
audience cheers and celebrates

With every one done
People waiting for a great show
Boy sits down
Trembling hands, ready to start
Turns to the page
Breathes
Gets in place
Reads the notes
Look at the time signature
Waits,
straightens ,
Thinks,
Then humming the tune
Remembering how to play
Playing in c major
The music flies around
people listening
Plays,
scared,
Nervous,
Continues,
Breathes,
Then stops
Seen lots of smiles in the crowd
And then
               And then
                              And then
There was clapping, cheering
Breathes in and out
Then bows

Inline

With 4 teammates on the rink,
And a puck waiting to be dropped,
The experienced boy stands on the rink,
Rushing anxiousness speeds through him,
Eyeing the puck nervously,
Steadies himself,
Lines up his stick,
Plans his very first move,
Stares the opponent down,
Tenses,
Relaxes,
Waits,
And then through stiff silence,
Smacks it forward,

The puck,
Spins out and away,
Slides,
Slips,
Skids,
Glides,
Hurtles,
Laughs past players,
Until every face grimaces with painful suspense,
     And then,
And then,
         And then,
Right before the BIG GOAL,
Bounces off the post.
